Streaming platforms don't just watch a finished film or series and decide whether it looks good — they run it through a technical QC process with pass/fail specs, and a grade that isn't finished to those specs gets bounced back regardless of how it looks on a reference monitor. Understanding what these specs actually require before the grade starts saves a project from expensive rework at the finish line.

What Do Netflix, Amazon, and Apple TV+ Actually Require?

Each platform publishes its own technical delivery specification, and while the details differ, they share common ground: a minimum resolution and color space for the master (commonly UHD in Rec. 2020 container, even when the creative grade targets Rec. 709), specific loudness and audio requirements handled outside the color suite, and increasingly, HDR mastering in either Dolby Vision or HDR10 alongside a compatible SDR trim pass. Apple TV+ in particular has been aggressive about requiring Dolby Vision masters with dynamic metadata, while Amazon and Netflix both accept Dolby Vision but maintain their own additional QC checkpoints on top of it.

Why Does HDR Mastering Change the Grading Process?

Grading for HDR isn't simply "the same grade, brighter." Highlight detail that would clip in an SDR grade has room to breathe in HDR, which means a colorist has to make deliberate decisions about how far to push specular highlights, how skin tones hold up at higher nit levels, and how the image reads on both a consumer HDR television and the calibrated reference display in the suite. The SDR trim pass isn't an automatic conversion either — it needs its own creative pass to make sure the film doesn't look flat or crushed when a platform's algorithm maps it down for non-HDR viewers.

What Is a Trim Pass, and Why Do Deliverables Need One?

A trim pass is a secondary grade, derived from the HDR master, that's manually adjusted so the SDR version holds the same creative intent rather than relying purely on automated tone mapping. Platforms increasingly require a manually trimmed SDR deliverable rather than accepting an algorithmic down-convert, because automated mapping can flatten contrast or shift color balance in ways a director wouldn't approve. Budgeting time for a proper trim pass, not just a Dolby Vision export, is one of the most commonly underestimated line items in a delivery timeline.

How Do QC Rejections Typically Happen?

The most common rejection reasons aren't creative — they're technical: illegal luma or chroma values outside broadcast-safe range, inconsistent black levels between shots, banding introduced by aggressive gradient work in the grade, or metadata mismatches between the Dolby Vision XML and the actual picture. A finishing studio that has been through platform QC before builds these checks into the grading pass itself, rather than treating QC as a separate hurdle to clear after the creative work is done.

How Should a Production Plan for Streaming Delivery from the Start?

The cheapest way to hit a streaming spec is to know which platform the project is delivering to before the grade begins, since HDR mastering workflow, color space, and trim requirements shape decisions made early in the color pipeline, not just the final export settings. A finishing studio that asks about the delivery platform on day one — rather than after a color-locked cut arrives — can build the grade around the actual spec instead of retrofitting it later.
