How Do You Keep Skin Tones Consistent Across a Commercial Campaign?

Consistent skin tone across a full brand campaign starts with a single reference standard set early in the grading session, then applied against every other setup in the shoot — rather than correcting each deliverable independently after the fact.

Why Is This Harder Than It Sounds?

Brand campaigns rarely live in a single spot anymore. A 30-second broadcast cut, a vertical social edit, a longer brand film, and stills often all come from the same shoot, sometimes across multiple shoot days or locations. Keeping talent's skin tone consistent across all of those deliverables, under different lighting setups and sometimes different cameras, is one of the more underappreciated technical challenges in commercial color grading.

How Do You Set a Reference Standard?

We build a reference skin tone standard early, usually from the cleanest, best-lit footage in the shoot, and use that as the anchor every other setup gets measured against. From there, we track and correct for lighting shifts scene to scene — a talent's face lit by soft daylight in one location and warmer tungsten practicals in another needs individual attention to land at the same believable tone.

Does One Correction Approach Work for a Diverse Cast?

No. This work becomes more complex with diverse casts, where a single approach to skin tone correction doesn't hold up across a range of complexions. Every skin tone reflects and absorbs light differently, so qualification and secondary grading have to be tailored per subject rather than applied as one global adjustment across the frame — the same principle used in documentary interview grading across mixed lighting sources.

Why Does This Matter Beyond a Single Video Cut?

Getting this right protects a brand's visual consistency across every platform a campaign lives on. It's often the difference between a shoot that feels professionally finished and one that feels slightly uneven from cut to cut — see also how this scales across full multi-format campaigns.
