What Does Color Grading Add to the Anamorphic Look?
The anamorphic look people chase — oval bokeh, horizontal flares, distinct edge falloff — is only partly a lens characteristic. A meaningful part of it gets built or reinforced in the color grade through contrast handling, flare treatment, and how vignetting is preserved rather than corrected away.
How Does Color Contrast Reinforce the Anamorphic Feel?
Anamorphic glass tends to produce lower-contrast, slightly softer images with distinctive veiling flare. Rather than correcting that softness away, we typically lean into it with gentle highlight rolloff that lets flares bloom naturally instead of clipping into harsh, digital-looking streaks.
Why Preserve Flare Color Instead of Neutralizing It?
Color temperature shifts within flares often get preserved and sometimes enhanced, since that detail is frequently what makes a shot read as genuinely anamorphic rather than a spherical image with an anamorphic-style LUT applied over it. Removing that shift in the name of "clean" color usually costs the shot its character.
Should Vignetting Be Corrected in the Grade?
Anamorphic lenses naturally darken toward the corners of frame. A heavy-handed correction to fix that in the grade often strips away the exact character a director chose the format for in the first place, so we typically preserve a natural falloff rather than flattening it out.
Can a Spherical Lens Approximate the Anamorphic Look in the Grade?
Color can get partway there, but not all the way. For productions weighing real anamorphic glass against a spherical-plus-grade approximation, that decision is worth discussing with a colorist during prep — before it's locked into the shooting plan — since some optical characteristics simply can't be replicated after the fact.
